FAQ's - Gut zu wissen
Please have a look at our gallery page so that you can get a general idea of what the igloo village looks like, as this could answer a few of your questions.
1. How is the Igloo Village built?
All igloo villages are completely rebuilt every year. Inflatable balloons are covered with snow which give the basic shape of the igloo. We then add on igloos one at a time until we reach the desired size for the village. The average construction time for an Igloo Village is approximately 2700 hours. The traditional method of using snow bricks is no longer used, except in the case of individual igloos.
2. What does the floor plan look like and how are the igloos connected with one another?
The entire igloo village is built as a tunnel system, i.e. from the outside the igloo village looks like a huge pile of snow with a few entrances. The rest is connected by “underground” corridors (the drawing below shows a possible layout).

3. How big is an igloo village?
The construction and design of the individual igloos vary by location. The typical measurements are as follows: the corridors are approximately three meters high and one meter wide. A sleeping igloo is four meters high and four meters in diameter. The igloo for guest activities has a diameter of 8-10 meters. The measurements can change during the course of the winter.
4. Could an igloo in the igloo village collapse?
The techniques employed in igloo construction result in an inherently stable structure. Safety measurements are continually taken, which offer information on the conditions in the different igloos to our experienced specialists. Years of experience in building igloos as well as various tests (driving over the igloos with snow cats, blasting the igloos) give us the certainty that our igloos are absolutely stable.
5. How does the air supply work?
A large part of the snow itself is made up of air and snow is also permeable to air to a small degree. The sleeping areas are elevated and the nitrogen sinks to the floor. The entrance door is always open and the air can circulate through several exits. The rooms are very high and filled with plenty of oxygen..
6. Who is responsible for the art?
The long friendship between Adrian Günter and several Inuit from Canada has provided the foundation for the art work in the Igloo Villages. We also maintain close contact with the Cerny Inuit Collection. Besides our cooperation with Inuit artists, many artists from Switzerland and abroad add their artistic touch to our walls.
7. Can I build my own igloo?
An igloo construction specialist would be happy to introduce you to igloo construction technology. You will find details on this on the events page.
8. What should I wear, and what should I bring with me?
The Igloo Village is in the middle of a ski resort, on a mountain, in the wild. You'll need to come prepared for those types of conditions. Normally the temperatures inside of the igloos lies around freezing.
Your clothing and equipment:
- Warm clothing, suitable for winter (i.e. ski clothing)
- Comfortable, warm shoes (i.e. Snowboarding boots or Moonboots)
- Good gloves
- Sunglasses (for the travel)
- Dry socks, long-johns, pyjamas
- A towel, swimming trunks and flip-flops for the Sauna/Whirlpool

A backpack is the ideal form of baggage for an overnight stay in the Igloo Village (a sports bag works too though!). Please don't bring a large suitcase.
9. What is the difference between the Standard and Romantic Igloos?
The standard igloos are lit by LED light, have place for 6 people to sleep in, they are particularly suited to families, groups and individuals. The romantic igloos are twin igloos, intended for couples, their interiors have LED-light, individually sculpted walls, as well as ice or snow sculptures in selected igloos. The romantic igloos are kitted out with sheepskins to sleep on, as well as a special double-sleeping bag!
10. Who may stay in the Igloo Village?
We have had guests from the age of 19 months, to 82 years. The average age of the guests is around 35 years. Everyone who feels healthy and can “endure” a bit of nature is by all means welcome! We request guests with existing medical conditions to consult their doctor in advance (in particular with regard to the altitude of the Igloo Village).
11. Can individuals also stay in the Igloo Village?
Sure! Single persons can sleep in a Standard Igloo. An individual person could also sleep in a Romantic Igloo, but then must pay the price for two people in this case. Everybody is welcome!
12. We're a group of 4 people, can we have a Standard Igloo to ourselves?
Yes, this is possible, your group would just rent the whole igloo to yourselves, this is priced at the rate of 6 adults. See our prices here.
13. Can I stay for more than one night in the Igloo Village?
Yes, although we don't generally recommend this as we neither have running water, nor showers. 99% of our guests only spend one night with us. Have a look at our packages for deals including stay in a hotel.
14. How can I pay?
The overnight accommodation is paid for in advance (by means of cash in advance, debit or credit card). A bill will be drawn up for you to pay for items consumed during the evening (drinks, merchandising articles) which is to be paid in cash after breakfast.
15. What's included in the price?
We have a great overview of this on the Services page!
16. Who takes care of me?
From your arrival until breakfast the next morning, one or several guides will be at your side to ensure your well-being. The Igloo Guide is also responsible for your safety, which is our main priority.
17. What is there to eat?
Fondue is the standard meal in the Igloo Village. If someone cannot eat fondue, we have the option of ordering spaghetti. We request that you let us know in advance in such cases. Breakfast is in a nearby mountain restaurant and included in the price.
18. What do we get to drink?
The selection of drinks includes various teas, various types of punch (which can be creatively “enriched”), as well as a self-brewed igloo mulled wine. In the morning we serve herbal tea right at your sleeping bag. Water and tea are free of charge during your stay.
19. How are the meals cooked?
All meals and drinks are prepared using a gas stove.
20. Can animals come too?
As a general rule, yes. However, only animals that are used to the cold may come! The animal may not sleep in the Standard Igloos and you must bring an extra sleeping bag and blanket for your animal. We request you to consult us in advance.
21. What do I sleep on?
There is 8 cm of insulation on the snow bed, on which a layer of foam material is placed. Sleeping comfort is rounded off with blankets in the Standard Igloos and sheepskin rugs in the Romantic Igloos.
22. Should I bring my own sleeping bag?
No, we will provide you with an expedition sleeping bag which is efficient to minus 40°C. In addition, every guest receives an inner sleeping bag free of charge, so that all hygiene aspects are fully taken into account.
23. What temperatures should I be prepared for?
Generally snow has a temperature of 0°C and is an excellent insulation material. When people sleep in an igloo they warm it up to approximately +2°C. The temperature rises by another 5°C when meals are being cooked. Outside it can become very cold after sunset, but inside the Igloo Village the temperature stays at a constant 0 - 5°C.
24. Is there a toilet?
Yes, there are toilets which are harmoniously built into the Igloo Village with snow. The Igloo Romantic Suite and the Igloo Romantic Plus have their own “throne”. Of course there are also toilets in the nearby mountain restaurant before you head up to the Igloo Village and the next morning after your return.
25. How does the sauna work?
The sauna facilities consist of two expanded caravans which are brought up the mountain in the summer. They are linked together – one of them serving as a changing room, while the actual sauna is installed in the other one. You can cool off outside in the snow. Flip-flops are recommended.
26. How does the jacuzzi work?
Our jacuzzis are equipped with an additional heating system to defy the outside temperatures. The water temperature is between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius. The jacuzzi is cleaned everyday. Besides completely changing the water, the evaporation of approx. 50 liters and consequent refilling ensures that the water is always fresh.
27. Is there a shower?
There are no showers available in the actual Igloo Villages. Using the snow to wash up a bit can be very refreshing. The next morning a shower is only available in our partner restaurant in Engelberg. At the other locations, you will unfortunately have to do without a shower for one day.
28. What is the evening program like?
Besides standard elements such as the aperitif, evening meal, wellness, snowshoe hiking/night walking, there are basically no other planned activities. You can make the evening even cosier by chatting and playing games with the other guests. The secluded location provides a wonderful atmosphere for a relaxing evening, and if you wish you may also turn up the music a bit.
29. Can I store my luggage somewhere?
Yes, after consulting your guide there is the possibility of storing your baggage in the mountain station or in the partner mountain restaurant.
30. What happens when there's bad weather?
As long as the mountain transport is running, the weather is of not much consequence to us! Because the Igloo Village is completely isolated from the outside conditions it can rain, snow and hail outside without us even realising that anything is even going on!
31. What are the special safety instructions for the Igloo Village in Zugspitze?
In order to prevent any danger it's possible that the Igloo Village in Zugspitze need to be evacuated whilst the avalanches are being sprung. Not to worry though, the Igloo Village isn't actually in an avalanche danger zone! The evacuation could take place in the middle of the night, without being able to return to the Igloo Village throughout the night. The management does their utter best to ensure that events such as this don't happen, but in our experience we expect such evacuations to take place on 2-3 nights per winter season. During such an evacuation, please take heed of the instructions of the Igloo Guide!
Limitations to the offers we have as a result of such an evacuation will not be refunded.
32. What happens if a booking is cancelled by the Igloo Village?
If the lifts are unable to run due to a storm then we have to cancel your booking. If your booking gets cancelled you have the choice of moving your booking to a different date, receiving a Voucher in the value of your booking, or getting a full refund.

It's important to mention the hard work that goes into building the Igloo Village every season, about 2000 hours are spent building each Igloo Village (which works out to about 1 hour of building time per guest, every season)! Costs of travel to the Igloo Village, and the cost of using the mountain transport system are not included in the booking.
34. Does the Igloo Village look like it does in the photos?
All of the images presented on the web site and in the media are from previous winter seasons. Generally the Igloo Villages are similar to the shown images, however, due to the fact that they are rebuilt every year, there are subtle variances.
35. Can I get insurance against cancellation charges?
We recommend you taking out insurance against cancellation charges. The Igloo Village does not provide this insurance itself, it's in the hands of the guest to take out such insurance. We are registered with ELVIA insurers, you can quickly and easily get such cover on the ELVIA website http://www.elvia.ch/, or we can send the guests a bill for this service. Please don't pay the amount for this insurance together with the amount for the booking to the Igloo Village.
